Frugal Babywearing
Short on cash and looking for a way to carry your baby?
We carry some inexpensive carriers such as the Moby Wrap that are great for getting started with babywearing. The Moby is one of my favorite carriers for newborns and amounts to buying wonderful fabric for less than $6 yard.
Black and Khaki Hotslings are also very reasonably priced, as are our Maya Wrap Baby slings
You can also check Baby Sling Bargains for great deals on items that have been returned - most items have been opened and tried on, but never used, as well as slings that we use for local demonstrations. We also have items that were discontinued and never opened, all sold at a deep discount.
There are some great instructions for making your own wrap at WearYourBaby.com
Can you make your own wrap/sling/etc? SURE, but for me, once I figured in the real price of the fabric (sometimes many purchases to find the right one), my time, and the quality of the end product, I would have been better off to just buy the product myself.
Will your homemade carrier work as well as the ones that we sell? Possibly.
A wrap is simply a long piece of fabric, but the magic is in the fabric. You can go to the fabric store, buy 6 yards of fabric and make a wrap. But, you may find that it is not as comfortable or as easy to use as the wraps we sell.
Our woven wraps have just the right amount of give to hug your baby perfectly. The German wraps have just the right thickness to be as comfortable as a stretchy wrap with the firmness of a woven. You won't likely find this magical formula in your local fabric store, but you may find a nice cotton interlock that will do a nice front carry or a gauze that can be used for everything.
If you aren't happy with your homemade wrap, please don't give up on wraps. I strongly suggest that you try to find people in your local area who can help you with your wrap and/or let you try on some of the popular brands.
You may just need a few tips on how to spread the fabric or you may find that a purchased wrap is simply more comfortable.
Try to find a local Babywearing group to meet other babywearing moms. At most of these meeting you will be able to see other's carriers and try them on. What a great way to meet other moms and solve any babywearing problems that you may be having.
If you know someone who is truly needy (low income, special needs, etc.), please contact No Mother Left Behind or La Leche League . Many vendors and retailers (including us) donate to these organizations for moms in need.
