Most comfortable carriers

All of the slings that we sell are comfortable, but the 2 shouldered carriers really shine.

The key to comfort for the wearer is in holding your child close to your body and above your center of gravity (high & tight). You want to avoid having the child "dangle" from your body.

For a newborn a stretchy wrap such as the Moby wrap cannot be beat. It takes about 15 minutes to learn to tie, this extremely comfortable carrier and it is surprising easy.

For a child of any age, the most comfortable carrier is a woven wrap, which can be tied over 20 different ways. Our best woven is the Storchenwiege from Germany. See More about Woven Wraps for more information on our woven wraps. Wraps are our favorite all around carrier for versatility.

The Mei Tai is a close second in comfort and is so very easy to use for front or back carries. It is our favorite back carrier.

Soft Pack carriers based on the ancient design of the Mei Tai like our Ergo are easy to use, very comfortable, and can carry children up to 3 years old (or more). The structured waist belt helps to transfer some of the weight to the waist.

Ringslings and Pouches are very comfortable when sized/adjusted correctly, but they will never be as comfortable as two shouldered carriers over the long term.

To make any carrier as comfortable as possible please check the following to ensure that you are wearing your sling as comfortably as possible:
  1. The sling should rest on the ball (bone) of your shoulder, not next to your neck. This will restrict your arm movement somewhat in the most comfortable position. Moving the fabric toward your neck will allow more arm movement, but put strain on your muscles and possibly cause neck pain.

  2. Your baby should rest at or above your belly button. Holding the baby lower than your waist will strain your back and cause you to get tired much faster.

  3. Hold your baby as close to your body as possible. The sling should "strap your baby to your body" more than it "hangs baby from your shoulder".
To make the baby as comfortable as possible, ensure that they are well supported:
  • In a reclining position, ensure that baby's entire back and head is well supported by the fabric.
  • In a seated position, there should be a wide band of fabric supporting the baby's thighs and buttocks - not just a thin strip of fabric at the crotch. The child's back should be supported as well.
